The importance of understanding your relationships and the support around you

Each year 3.7 million people in Europe will receive a cancer diagnosis. Cancer affects all aspects of your life, but also impacts on your relationships with those around you. You may need to rely on family, friends and others you are close to (informal caregivers) for practical and emotional support day to day. For patients and informal caregivers alike, the changes this can have on your relationship may be difficult. But research has found that when informal caregivers are actively involved and get good support it makes the patient happier. It also helps with managing symptoms, and improves their overall quality of life. However, the ups and downs of living with cancer affect you all. It's really important to take care of the emotional needs of yourself and those around you, to avoid getting overwhelmed. The DIAdIC project was designed to see how patients and informal caregivers can best be supported together.
